Halons have been used to protect a wide range of risks and the choice of alternative has to be based on consideration of the hazard to be protected. The following sections suggest a number of alternative technologies and give an indication of their applicability and limitations.

Critical facilities require fire protection systems which can detect and suppress fires quickly without harming equipment, the facility, or the environment. Gielle Clean Agent systems offer the best way to meet this challenge by discharging an environmentally friendly agent in less than 10 seconds, leaving no harmful residue to clean up.

3M™ Novec™ 1230 fire extinguishing agent

3M™ Novec™ 1230 fire protection fluid is based on a proprietary chemistry from 3M called C6-fluoroketone; it is also known as dodecafluoro 2-methylpentane-3-one; its ASHRAE nomenclature is FK 5-1-12 — the way it is designated in NFPA 2001 and ISO 14520 clean agent standards.

3M™ Novec™ 1230 is a high molecular weight material, compared with the first generation halocarbon clean agents.

Fm-200 extinguishing agent

FM-200 is a compound of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen (CF3CHFCF3). It is colorless, odorless and electrically non-conductive.

It suppresses fire by a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms without affecting the available oxygen. This allows personnel to see and breathe, permitting them to leave the fire area safely

Inergen extinguishing agent

INERGEN agent is free of residues and corrosive by-products that may produce further property damage.  And because it poses no ozone depleting or global warming threat, INERGEN agent will never be subject to future legislative bans.

INERGEN Fire Extinguishing Agent is a mixture of three naturally-occurring gases (52% nitrogen, 40% argon, and 8% carbon dioxide).

Halotron extinguishing agent

Halotron products are halocarbon-based clean fire extinguishing agents with a wide variety of commercial, industrial, maritime and military applications. They are discharged either as a rapidly evaporating liquid (Halotron I) or gas (Halotron II) that leaves no residue. This minimizes or eliminates the potential damage to valuable assets like electronic equipment, machinery, motors and construction materials.

Carbon dioxide CO2 extinguishing agent

Carbon dioxide is a clean gaseous agent, in plentiful supply and can be stored in either high pressure cylinders or low pressure tanks. It has been used effectively as a fire extinguishing gas since the early 1900’s.Carbon dioxide continues to be used in numerous applications around the world for the extinguishment of flammable liquid fires, gas fires, electrically energized fires and, to a lesser degree, fires involving ordinary cellulosic materials such as paper and cloth.
